Now deep into its second generation of production, the Nissan Versa gets more standard features on its top-level SV Special Edition trim for the 2019 model year. In addition, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now available for smartphone integration.
Designed and classified as a subcompact sedan, the 2019 Nissan Versa is available in four variants: S, S Plus, SV, and SV Special Edition. The vehicle seats up to five people, with 90.2 cubic feet of passenger volume and 14.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity. At the SV trim level, Nissan upgrades the cloth seat trim, bumps up the driver's seat from 4-way to 6-way manual adjustability, and makes the rear seats foldable to expand cargo capacity. The Special Edition is the only trim with a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
For comfort and convenience, the Versa starts with features such as Siri Eyes Free, hands-free text messaging ability, Bluetooth wireless technology for audio streaming and hands-free phone calling, four-speaker audio, AM/FM radio, a USB port and an auxiliary audio jack for hooking up portable media devices, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The S Plus gets additional cruise control, and added on the SV are a service interval reminder and remote keyless entry. Unique to the Special Edition are smart key system with push-button engine ignition, NissanConnect infotainment integration, a three-month complimentary subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio, and the aforementioned Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Powering the 2019 Nissan Versa is a 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that puts out 109 horsepower and 107 lb-ft of torque. While the base-level S trim uses a 5-speed manual transmission, the others go with a continuously variable transmission that Nissan calls Xtronic CVT. Since the CVT changes seamlessly through a continuous range of effective gear ratios, rather than uses the energy-consuming gear-shifting mechanism of the 5-speed, it provides the vehicle's peak fuel economy: at 31 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway. (The 5-speed manual enables a fuel economy of 27 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.)
For restraint and cushioning in the event of a crash, the 2019 Nissan Versa comes with dual front impact airbags, dual front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and dual roof-mounted side curtain airbags. Also standard are a rearview camera, vehicle stability control, traction control, an anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist. Nissan adds an engine immobilizer on the Special Edition as an anti-theft mechanism.
