The LEAF is a standout in the electric vehicle market, ranking #2 in its class—an impressive feat in such a competitive field. While the Nissan LEAF already boasts numerous appealing features, recent enhancements have further boosted its popularity and competitive advantage.
Fermata Energy Bidirectional Charger
A significant recent update to the LEAF is the introduction of the Fermata Energy Bidirectional Charger. This cutting-edge charger not only draws energy from the grid but also returns power back to it. This innovative function makes the LEAF the first electric vehicle in the U.S. capable of both pulling electricity from and supplying energy to the grid.
This charger comes with a range of features that enhance its appeal. For example, it can store energy for later use or allow owners to save money by sending electricity back to the grid when not needed. The bidirectional charger has undergone rigorous safety testing, meeting several industry standards, including UL and CHAdeMO, as well as Nissan’s own requirements, and is now approved for use in the LEAF.
The V2X Platform
In addition to the Fermata charger, Nissan has integrated the V2X platform into the LEAF. This intelligent software works in tandem with the charger, increasing the LEAF’s power output by up to 33%. The V2X platform also meets industry standards and features an optimized design that lowers both manufacturing costs and customer prices. The bidirectional charger and software are being installed in Nissan dealerships and made available to fleet customers. Importantly, this new technology does not affect the Nissan LEAF’s warranty and may even be compatible with models as far back as 2013, depending on state regulations.
